 Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread

1940

FirstMention.com explores the origins of
common products and phrases.

I wonder what was the greatest thing before sliced bread?

But I was also wondering where this saying came from, and of course, where was its First Mention?

Turns out it was mom.

Or more precisely, some advertising maverick thought it up and attributed it to mom,.  The phrase had its First Mention  on February 16, 1940 in the Burlington Daily Times-News.
