There's no doubt that John McCain III comes from what you can call a Navy family. McCain's father, John McCain Jr, was an Admiral. So was his grandfather, John McCain Sr. There's even a Navy vessel, a destroyer, named the USS John McCain. You can't get much more Navy than that. So it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that presidental hopeful Senator John McCain has his FirstMention while in the Navy. And what a FirstMention it was. As told in the New York Times of July 31, 1967, Lieut. Comdr. John Sidney McCain 3rd was a fighter pilot aboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal when the ship more or less blew up. In fact, it might even have been McCain's A-4 Skyhawk that caused the disaster. Young Lieutenant Commander McCain was featured prominently in the story. The toll that the blast took on lives and on the Forrestal itself was enormous. Quite a way to get your name in the papers. Know of an earlier FirstMention?
